Radars & Fences

When the Paradigms of Discipline and Control Collide

New York University
March 6-7, 2008

The METAGALLERY represents a first set of references (short introductions and links) to explore the works of the artists and collectives invited by d-i-n-a since 2000.

"Media Hacking, Communication Guerrilla, Culture Jamming", "Radical Entertainment, Collective Hallucinations", "Digital Deconstructed" label creative practices that use irony and usually low-tech strategies to subvert communication technologies as tools to manifacture consent, control or mass entertainment.

These classes or labels are meant to open a debate rather than freezing it with a final categorization. We use them to suggest common objectives, style and practices through different historical, geografical and cultural contexts.

MEDIA HACKING, COMMUNICATION GUERRILLA, CULTURE JAMMING

Actions / campaigns which infiltrate the media machine, questioning its transparency, exposing its structural contradictions or simply using the 'fun' factor to subvert it.

Off-beat projects flirting with popular culture products, icons, and communication styles.

Ironical forms of criticism of the commercial exploitation of public domain.
