The group LAN was born in 2001 at the Department of New Media (http://www.snm-hgkz.ch) at the University of Art and Design Zürich, Switzerland. Students, designers, artists and media workers operate under this name, creating network-oriented interactive projects and addressing crucial and problematic issues in the communication processes through computer networks.

« The artistic mode of production is important to us. It enables us to develop applications and tools by using free software modules and scripts and then publicize our products as such for the use of others».

Recently awarded in the "Software art" section of the Berlin festival Transmediale, Tracenoizer is a project that focuses in a very original way on the status of the information dispersed in the Web: the 'data-bodies' about facts or persons that are processed and mirrored again and again by the same social and technical mechanisms of the World Wide Web.

« For us, software art is opposed to the notion of software as a tool» - say Florian Cramer and Ulrike Gabriel, jurors for the "Software art" section at the 2001 edition of Transmediale - « Not because we would want to differentiate some kind of high art from some kind of low craftsmanship of programming. Instead, software art has the potential to make us aware that digital code is not harmless, that it is not restricted to simulations of other tools, and that is itself a ground for creative practice».
