Adrian Ward is a software artist who develops audiovisual interactive and generative applications. Projects like Auto-Illustrator or Auto-Shop insist on the possibility of a radical change in the way people interact with digital tecnology and software in particular, focusing on an ironical reformulation of the copyright issues and in the extension of aesthetical subjectivity to the code itself.

His most ambitious project to date is surely Auto-Illustrator, an autogenerative program for vector graphic design. The more the user gets used to its interface - that explicitly recalls the interface of an almost homonym proprietary graphics software -, the more s/he realizes that the same program is taking control over the very design process. Very familiar functions have been modified in order to act as semi-autonomous design tools, that are able to take their own decisions on how the work should proceed.

Auto-Illustrator won the software art award at the 2001 edition of Transmediale.
