rob mazurek – sweet and vicious like frnkenstein (mego)

we already know this musician quite well for his work on the chicago post rock and avant jazz scene including collaborations with the most influential names from that scene...in case you need any reminding, those are names with a serious musical background like: jim o’rourke, tortoise, gastr del sol, sam prekop, brokeback, stereolab, pan american... and naturally many other, quality names. rob mazurek is co founder and member of chicago underground duo/trio/quartet/orchestra as well as post rock project isotope 217. he is cornetist, improviser, composer, visual artist, multi-media artist… working on paintings, installations and of course sound which is combination between computer and synth generated sounds interspersed with fragments of cornet notes and solos.
all these before mentioned artists that work on the chicago post rock scene, have never been unfamiliar with improvisation. even in the actual classical form of post rock (by this i mean tortoise, godspeed you black emperor, pan american, tristeza, isotope 217) improvisation was retained. the classical post rock sound in the past few years seemed to have withdrawn in the background and thus evolved into a completely electronic direction. we realize that through project orton socket, behind which is also rob mazurek doing experimentations with electronics, found sounds, sound manipulation, than moikai label or jim o’rourke works like his mego album. sweet and vicious like frankenstein exactly proves all this. it is a product of the evolution and the turn over of the post rock scene into a completely improv and electronic direction. a match between improvisation and contemporary electronics. a match between different moods and textures. field recordings on one, and analog and digital electronics on the other side. a match of the abstract electronic nature and the emotional. all that combined into two long fluctuant pieces in which the sensibility and the intensity keep changing.
