dirge – fountain ep (autres
direction in music)
i stopped listening to the radio show ‘cb radio’, that treats alt country music,
so as to listen to this release. when playing the album and switching from the
fm to md/tape channel, it felt exactly the same, as if i haven’t changed
anything and the atmosphere remained the same. as if this album was played on
‘cb radio’. so what do we have here? well, generally alt neo country, no
depression, desert music. slow, melancholy, dawdling. sad violins, quiet rhythm
section, unnoticeable guitars...the refrences are something between lambchop,
mogwai or maybe palace... this ep is a collection of tracks made somewhere
between december 2002 and july 2003. played live and recorded by david fontaine
in a house in the middle of nowhere in february. each song is created as a
consequence of a personal experience. each song has a story behind it. the third
one is made right after some lousy new year’s eve party. when after one hard
night in liverpool his friend lois had woken up hungover saying “i have a weird
silence in my head”, they decided that they had to write a song. that is the
story behind the fourth song. at one of their gigs, in nanets, they met up with
stephane of autres directions and they seemed to like the idea that their music
can be downloaded. so there’s this release. concise and to the point, with its
five songs it says all that there is to be said, it quickly goes through the
experienced stories and doesn’t leave space for you to ask for more. and now we
go back again to the radio channel and the frequency one hundred and three.
